Environmental Fact Sheet:
West Hilhurst Semi-Detached R-2000 Home
2816 Parkdale Blvd. N.W.
The West Hillhurst Eco-fill incorporates many state-of-the-art technologies
in the building envelope, heating system, and appliances to reduce the
demand for energy while providing equal or greater comfort to the owner.
This will not only account for significant savings in lower heating
and cooling bills, but will help achieve an overall lower level of energy
consumption, and decrease one’s ecological footprint.
Building Envelope:
Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) R35 Walls:
ICF construction sandwiches a heavy, high-strength material
(reinforced concrete) between two layers of a light, highly insulated
one (EPS or foam). Concrete walls built with insulating concrete forms
(ICFs) give a building enhanced comfort, solidity, durability, resistance
to natural disasters, quietness, and energy efficiency. Integrating
forms into the envelope of the house reduces waste.
Solar Hot Water and Heating:
- Rack mounted Enerworks residential solar collectors with an Enerworks
solar appliance connected to a 360 litre solar storage tank for hot
water and heating needs, drastically reducing energy costs.
- High efficiency Gas Boiler provides necessary backup.
- Radiant floor heating using 4” thick concrete floors stores
heat energy for those cold winter nights.
- Interior temperatures remain stable during summer and winter.
- Heat Recovery Ventilator will recycle heat while providing fresh
air.
Passive Solar Design:
Managing solar gain efficiently throughout the year by:
- The south facing building orientation with oversized eaves to maximize
winter sun angles
- Strategic use of double glazed windows on the south side, and triple
glazed windows on the north
- Utilizing the thermal mass from the concrete floors
- Cellular shades throughout also enhance insulation in winter and
shading in summer
Quality Appliances:
- High-end Stainless steel Energy Star appliances: all appliances
significantly exceed Energy Star standards where one is in place.
- With products like the Miele super energy efficient dishwasher,
or the Jenn-Air Dual Fuel Downdraft range, this kitchen is built for
performance and entertaining at its finest
Fresh Clean Indoor Atmosphere
A large part of one’s sense of “home” is determined
by the comfort of the interior spaces. Behind the scenes, the basis
of a comfortable, safe home atmosphere is superior indoor air quality.
Throughout the design process design decisions were made and materials
selected to ensure that everything breathed in and touched is as natural,
clean and healthy as possible.
Ecologically Minded Design:
- Emphasis on creating liveable space through good design, not unnecessary
“decoration”
- Modern aesthetic respects the function and nature of materials
- Use of long lasting, durable building materials reduces future
maintenance replacement costs
- Operable windows to provide fresh air circulation
Environmentally Friendly Finish Materials:
- Emphasis on no- or low-volatile organic compounds in materials
and finishes, where possible (i.e. no-VOC paint throughout)
- Smooth concrete floors throughout complement the decidedly modern
aesthetic while creating a long lasting, durable, low maintenance
floor and allowing efficient transfer of radiant heat
- High quality, ecologically considerate products throughout:
- Elegant natural stone – Brazilian slate graces the stairways,
entries and ensuite surrounds. Natural river rock tile enhances
wholistic spa ensuite shower experience.
- Delicate recycled glass mosaic tile kitchen backsplash accents
sleek concrete countertops
Water Efficiency
Water is a precious resource. Low water usage appliances were chosen
to reap an advantage from the start.
- Caroma dual-flush toilets in all bathrooms
- High-end Miele products including dishwasher and stackable front
loading washer and dryer unit highly rated for energy efficiency and
durability
- Rainwater collection through rain barrels for landscaping
- Landscape designed to maximize use of rainwater for natural passive
irrigation
Site
- Supporting inner city revitalization and reducing urban sprawl by
intensifying density
- Developing with quality, not quantity, in mind
- Public transportation access unparalleled – on bus route to
downtown core; Bow River pathway system across the street; 5 km to
Eau Claire by bicycle;
